Honoring the successful, and peaceful, resolution of the Chamizal dispute on boundaries between the United States and Mexico, Chamizal National Memorial is a multicultural facility that incorporates both nature and man made constructs. Caused by discrepancies between the actual path of the Rio de Janero river and what was indicated on the survey map from years before, the dispute lasted over 100 years and was only resolved in 1963. Today, the memorial contains an art gallery and some of the original boundary markers that were used to demarcate the boundary between the nations. Frequent festivals and events take place at the monument and there's a 1.8-mile walking path that circles around the park's boundaries. The park sits right on the edge of the United States-Mexico border, along the river and not far northeast of downtown El Paso.
